Features
When margins are tight and application windows are narrow, every dollar and every droplet need to work as hard as they can. John Deere See & Spray products bring resource-saving precision to the field:
- See & Spray Select: Covers fallow fields using advanced camera and nozzle-control technology to spray only emerged weeds. It can also apply traditional broadcast application.
- See & Spray Ultimate: For in-season application on corn, cotton, or soybeans in 76.2-cm (30-in.) or greater rows or fallow ground using machine learning to identify weed from crop. Also includes a dual product solution system that allows two separate tank mixes to be utilized, better combating herbicide resistance and time inefficiency with two passes in one. It can also apply traditional broadcast application.

Technology evolution
John Deere has focused on taking farmers’ application from field level to plant level over the years. From field to broadcast, section control to ExactApply™ individual nozzle control, and now the next step – to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Both See & Spray offerings work in conjunction with ExactApply nozzle control. They use a combination of cameras and processors to detect weeds before activating only the nozzles necessary to apply a burst of herbicide to the weed, achieving a hit rate comparable to traditional broadcast spray.
Data insights
How do you know See & Spray is doing its job? With the monitoring capabilities of John Deere Operations Center™ application and the Generation 4 4600 CommandCenter™ Display, you can track job quality and savings during and after application. These technology tools also offer weed pressure mapping, providing insights to make even better field management decisions.
Sustainability
Using less herbicide means using less water and creating less opportunity for drift, and that’s good for the land, water, and air that sustain us.
Additionally, See & Spray provides even more benefits for growers looking to make the best possible decisions about weed control.
See & Spray Ultimate benefits
- Improve weed control – Combat herbicide resistance with a dual-product solution system that uses two independent tank mixes in one pass, avoiding antagonism in more aggressive tank mixes.
- Reduce solution use – Reduce the applied volume of herbicide by more than two-thirds by avoiding inefficient traditional broadcast application in corn, cotton, and soybeans.*
- Gain cost efficiency – More than two-thirds spray volume reduction means significantly lower herbicide costs, fewer tendering stops, and more acres covered in a day.
NOTE: Results based on internal John Deere strip trials in corn, soybeans, and cotton in Iowa, Mississippi, Texas, and Illinois in typical growing conditions with carrying weed size, crop canopy, and field conditions using targeted spray of non-residual herbicide only and using current software/algorithm at time of trials. Results will vary based on crop and weed pressure.
See & Spray Select benefits
- Reduce solution use – By avoiding inefficient traditional broadcast applications and spraying only when weeds are detected, you can reduce the applied volume of herbicide by 77 percent.**
- Gain cost efficiency – Significantly reduce herbicide costs, make fewer tendering stops, and cover more acres in a day.
- Improve weed control – You may save enough to justify applying a different chemistry while improving your ability to manage herbicide-resistant weeds. Research has shown that weeds sprayed with complex tank mixes and more than two modes of action are 83 times less likely to develop herbicide resistance.
**NOTE: In tests over 75,000 acres of fallow ground, typical weed pressure of 3,000 weeds per acre, and with spray length settings of small medium, customers experienced an average herbicide savings of 77 percent compared to a traditional broadcast sprayer.
Fertilizers and crop protection products are too expensive to waste, and seed is too valuable to risk over- or under-treating. To help make sure your solution is getting to the crop at exactly the right rate and droplet size across a wider range of speeds, look to ExactApply nozzle control system.
The heart of the ExactApply system is a six-nozzle turret with multiple modes of operation to help maintain target rate and pressure. From the cab, operators can choose:
- 15-Hz pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses one solenoid for more consistent pressure and droplet size over a wider range of ground speeds and application rates.
- 30-Hz PWM pulses both solenoids at 15 Hz for more thorough coverage during high-volume applications, like liquid fertilizer.
- AutoSelect A/B mode automatically switches between two nozzles to maintain a constant spray pressure while you’re spraying conventionally.
- Turn compensation mode decreases the spray rate on the inside of a turn while increasing the rate on the outside, ensuring consistent application across the entire width of the boom.
- Individual nozzle control minimizes overlap by controlling spray application at the individual nozzle level, not in 2.4- to 3.35-m (8- to 11-ft) section widths.
By maintaining a target rate and pressure over a wider range of speeds, ExactApply lets you cover up to 20 more acres per hour (based on a 3.2-km/h [2-mph] increase in operating speed) with more consistent spray deposition, saving you input costs and preserving more of your crop’s yield potential.
ExactApply is available as a factory-installed option, or as a retrofit to 400, 600, and 4 Series Sprayer models.
Quality of application is critical. Avoid settling in the plumbing by keeping solution in motion with pressure recirculation, coupled with product reclaim and boom air purge. These features save precious time, product, and expense when rinsing and priming the boom while switching solutions.
Cost savings
- Pressure recirculation primes the boom versus traditional boom prime where liquid tends to be sprayed out, saving 113.6 L (30 gal.) each time. If an operator does this process 10 times a day, coupled with approximately 85.2 L (22.5 gal.) of solution savings with product reclaim one to two times per day, these two features together could save up to $600* a day.
- *NOTE: Assumes 113.6 L (30 gal.) of residual product in the system at 93.5 L/ha (10 gpa) and $20 per acre 10 times per day. Adjust the calculation to suite your operation.
- Reclaim expensive crop protection solutions between applications or required service in the field with product reclaim.
- Potentially reduce crop damage from residual chemical buildup.
Performance:
- Experience uniform distribution of product across the boom.
- Reduce nozzle clogging with increased agitation of product in solution system.
Keep solution in suspension in the boom and system while the machine is on and not spraying with pressure recirculation. Recirculation during rinsing removes any chemical that settled out of the suspension while spraying, resulting in higher rinse water velocity in the spray pipe. Rinse water can be recirculated multiple times to further clean spray pipes and reduce cleanout times. Boom pressure recirculation mixes the solution and primes the boom before spraying to obtain a homogenous chemical mixture throughout the solution system and up to the nozzle tip. This recirculation improves spray quality and reduces time at the start of spraying.
Product reclaim transfers chemical out of the boom plumbing into solution tanks to improve boom rinse functions, also reducing exposure when servicing nozzle bodies. Additionally, save on chemical cost and enable easier rinse water collection between rinses when operators are not spraying out of the boom in the field.
With the CommandDrive powertrain, save fuel, reduce cab noise, get improved traction in challenging conditions, and cover more acres per day. CommandDrive offers the operator an Auto Mode that automatically directs the engine to run at the lowest rpm necessary to maintain ground speed and hydraulic functions and to meet the demands of the solution system.
CommandDrive also allows operators to adjust the aggressiveness of acceleration and deceleration and features an Auto Idle system that reduces engine speed to 900 rpm when the machine is in park. It all adds up to:
- 20 percent or greater fuel savings
- More acres sprayed per day, thanks to fewer fuel stops and improved traction in rough conditions
- Reduced in-cab noise levels by 3to 5 decibels
- Fewer demands on the operator
CommandDrive is base equipment on all 408R, 410R, 412R, 612R, and 616R Sprayers, as well as 400R and 600R Dry Spinner Spreaders.
For the highest level of spray accuracy with less drift and reduced risk of boom damage, look to the BoomTrac Pro 2 automatic boom-height control system.
Thanks to the addition of an inertia-monitoring sensor that helps correct for chassis roll, BoomTrac Pro 2 offers up to 22 percent greater spray accuracy (composite score over a variety of terrains) compared to the previous BoomTrac Pro system, and a five time increase in the amount of time the boom maintains its target height, which is a real plus in rough or hilly conditions. Along with the improved accuracy and reduced drift, operators will appreciate having one less function to perform and one less thing to worry about.
NOTE: BoomTrac Pro 2 is required on all carbon fiber booms.

400 and 600 Series Sprayers and Dry Spinner Spreaders utilize the 4600 CommandCenter and SpreadStar controller allowing integrated control with the machine and dry spinner spreader.
The CommandARM™ controls, Gen 4 CommandCenter display, and SpreadStar have been updated and tailored to the needs of operators allowing them to see all key functions on one run screen including AutoTrac™ assisted steering system, variable rate documentation, field totals, and dry spinner spreader settings.
The Gen4 CommandCenter display allows operators to set up and apply single or dual products, utilizing variable rate map-based prescriptions with John Deere Section Control functionality. Click anywhere on the display to expand and easily adjust information.
To prepare for field application, simply press the Setup button in the bottom left corner of the display run page, and it will direct the user to the Work Setup window.
- Select the Location box to setup operator information including farm, field, and Operator information is not required to load and execute a variable-rate prescription.
- Select the Equipment box to do the initial setup of the machine including the number of bins in the dry spinner spreader.
- The Work Summary box shows a link for each bin in the dry spinner spreader. The screenshot above is for a two-bin dry box. Select each one to input or change the name of the product that will be applied. Up to 24 unique names can be entered into the display for various product types such as single product, blended product, or multi-product variable rate. The operator can also choose the target rate for spreading or load a variable-rate prescription.
Once the Work Setup window is complete, the updated SpreadStar application can then be used to input and setup the following:
Target spread rate – selecting the target rate box allows the operator to quickly adjust three different target rates or load a prescription if needed. The target rates can be adjusted when spreading by using the corresponding buttons on the CommandARM.
Product density/product applied – selecting either of these areas will take the user to a bin details page where more frequent dry spinner spreader inputs and adjustments are made. For dry spinner spreaders with multiple bins, individual tabs at the top of the screen make it easy to quickly toggle between them.
Features on the bin details page include:
- Bin on/off
- Bin chaining (not shown)
- Product density
- CFR value
- Feed gate opening
- Bin alarms
- Resetting bin counter
- Belt prime
Spinner settings
The last step is to setup the spinner settings by clicking on the spinner settings box in the SpreadStar application. The Add Spinner preset window will come up allowing the operator to create a new preset if they choose.
Preset functions include:
- Spinner target speed
- Spinner target speed alarms
- Spread width
- Fan frame setting
The bin details and spinner settings are saved with the Work Summary details. For example, an operator with a two-bin dry spreader may need to change between a two-product variable rate to a single blend application using bin chaining. When the operator switches back to two-product variable rate, SpreadStar automatically remembers the bin details and spinner settings that were last used with that configuration.
Even with this feature, it is still important to calibrate the dry spinner spreader when changing products to ensure an accurate and consistent spread pattern.
Sprayer Solution System
Direct injection is available for large 4 Series Sprayers (R4030/R4038/R4045) as a field-installed option. As solution tank mixes become more complex, operators need a better way to manage the products they are mixing in helping to reduce the risk of chemical residue. The integrated direct-injection system provides up to 889 L (235 gal.) of additional carrying capacity for raw chemicals and allows injection of up to two separate products directly into the boom (depending on installed configuration).
Machine | Carrying capacity | Maximum number of chemicals injected |
R4030/38 model year 2015 and older (serial number 10,999 and lower) | 511 L (135 gal.) | Two-one high volume, one low volume |
R4030/R4038 model year 2016 and newer (serial number 11,000 and higher) | 889 L (235 gal.) | Three-two high volume, one low volume |
R4045 | 889 L (235 gal.) | Three-two high volume, one low volume |
NOTE: Low-volume tanks and pumps must be configured with at least one high-volume tank and pump. High-volume tank and pump can be configured by itself.
The high-volume pump can produce spray rates between 0.15 to 5.92 L/min (0.04 to 1.56 gpm). The low-volume pump can achieve spray rates as low as 0.03 to 1.18 L/min (0.008 to 0.31 gpm).

Since the large 4 Series Sprayers (R4030/R4038/R4045) are designed to be direct-injection ready, the system is fully integrated with the GreenStar 3 2630 Display. This means less clutter in the cab due to the elimination of multiple displays as everything is controlled by the GreenStar display. Additionally, direct-injection ready means the electrical architecture of the R4030, R4038, and R4045 is designed for plug-and-play installation. Full integration with direct injection means less downtime and more time spraying in the field.
Model year 2017 direct-injection systems (attachments BKK10302, BKK10303, BKK10304, BKK10305) will have pump-rinse functionality added. Pump-rinse functionality can also be added to a current direct-injection system by adding a three-way inlet valve to each DI pump. The three-way valve connects on one port to the chemical tank for normal operation (injection) and to the clean water rinse tank on the other port (for daily pump rinse).
This feature allows for rinse water to be pulled from rinse tank, through the pump head, and out of the boom mixing chamber. This yields the following benefits:
- Automatic rinse system, integrated with pump operating modes, cleans chemical out of pump
- Reduce chemical residual buildup in pump
- Improved maintenance process, while enabling product to be stored in direct-injection tanks between operation
Dealer Use Only:
With the reduction of overall machine weights for model year 2016 production, model year 2016 and newer R4030/R4038 machines are now approved for installation of up to three pumps and up to 889 L (235 gal.) of concentrate storage (depending on configuration) matching the current R4045 approved configurations. Installing unapproved configurations on model year 2015 and older machines will void warranty and may cause structural machines issues.
NOTE: All injection supply line hoses must be ordered separately. Use the attachment number to locate the install instructions on the Ag Field Installation instructions page.
Direct injection is also available on model year 2013 and model year 2014 4940 models, which if ordered during model year 2017, will include the pump-rinse functionality.
