Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.

Clean flow of material out of the discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.

With an optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharging to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.

48A MulchControl handle

The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

Creates a beautiful looking lawn
Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
Reduces fertilizer needs
Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
No need to dispose of bags of clippings

How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
The MulchControl handle is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired

When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.

When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.

MulchControl compatibility

Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed for handle actuation: baffles, handle, and mulch blades.

CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:

Carefully check the area around the machine.
Disengage the mower before backing up.

NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.

Stop forward travel.
Look behind the machine to be sure there are no bystanders.
Push and hold in the RIO switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.

NOTE: If the mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement switch to the off position. Start engine and engage mower. Begin again with step 2.

Release the RIO switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
Resume forward travel. The mower or other attachment should continue operating.
Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

7P Poly Utility Cart

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

7P Poly Utility Cart

The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

A convenient foot pedal dump release kit, LP48017, which now comes standard on all 10P and 17P carts is available to retrofit existing poly carts. This kit allows the operator to use both hands to lift the cart bed for more natural and efficient unloading.

13 Steel Utility Cart

The 17-cu-ft (0.48-m³) capacity 16YS Swivel Cart is unique in the lineup of John Deere carts in that it can be swiveled 120 degrees to either side for easier unloading. The operator can simply pull up next to where they want to dump the material and swivel the cart, eliminating the need to back up the cart.

Cart has premium molded polypropylene box construction.
Polypropylene body will not rust or dent, staying new looking longer.
0.75- x 2-in. (19- x 51-mm) stake pockets are molded in to make addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (19-mm) molded channels on each side allow for easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in box bottom add strength and prevent a shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; no tailgate to loosen or remove.

Smart connector, wiring harness, and twist ties

GREAT Lawn Mower for a couple of acres...

The reason I bought this mower is (every few years...sometimes a couple, sometimes quite a few) I have to purchase a new riding mower for different reasons due to the mower dying. I would always purchase a "better to best" of the rated mowers out there for general purchase, just short of the level of the Deere S240. I live on a little over two acres with a couple small sloping hills and occasionally soft lawn in spots depending on how wet the season is. A couple of times I would get stuck in the soft lawn or notice significant slowing going up the sloping hills. I've been mowing this lawn for 18 years so I know exactly what to expect. I came to the conclusion getting the cheapest riding mower as possible was the wisest way to go since the additional cost for a "best" mower was, while a nice luxury, simply not cost effective. Fast forward to last season. Riding mower number 5 dies. Looking to get one of the "better to best" from the big box stores, I was considering the JD 100 series because it had a slight discount but, due to Covid, they were unavailable. I mean EVERY nicer riding mower was unavailable! While researching I saw JD had a discount on the 200 series. My thought process was like most peoples. The discount was significant enough to make it worth paying a little more to move up in class. I had to order something as nothing was immediately available. But, was it worth the extra couple of hundred bucks? Why not take a chance and see what happens? I spoke with the local dealer on the differences between the 100 and 200 series. The description was the performance would be noticably better, probably not dramatic, and with simple maintenance will last a very long time. The discount and financing made it an appealing option so I went for it. Got it actualy a couple months quicker than I thought after I ordered it. How I wish I had this machine 18 years ago. Would I describe it as great? No. But it's very, very good at everything. But, that's how I decribed Wayne Gretzky. He was just very, very good at everything. Easy maintenance, easy to level the deck, able to handle soft turf, loses little power on slopes and easy to handle. The way the dealer described it was spot on. The perfect description. If you're one of those people that tends to get the little nicer riding mowers but stay just shy of the next level, don't make that mistake again. The cost may be 25% more but well, well worth it. You'll notice the difference on all the little stuff. If you have a nice, level lot then probably not neccessary to spend more on a mower but no matter what, you'll notice the difference in quality after a couple mows.

MCS is Unavailable

I purchased an S240 in March of 2021 and put about 30 hours on it this season. I find that it mows well and is relatively easy to use. Other reviewers have noted the poor location of the RIO switch, and that is a drawback. The RIO is a frustrating safety feature, and users should have the option to disable it. Shoppers considering the S240 should be aware that the compatible MCS (BUC10907) has been on backorder for eight months, with no signs of progress. Requests for information from JD are met with a perfunctory "contact your dealer" response. Had I been informed of this situation at the point of sale, I would not have purchased this model. To be clear, then, my four-star rating is for the tractor itself. I recognize that many companies have supply difficulties right now, but it's important that the consumer be made aware.

Drive Belt Came Off and Burned at Only 5 Hours

Bought this mower and after 3 grass cuttings the drive belt came off and got hot and burned. Also cannot raise deck to highest level without it binding and making a noise. Also, at full throttle mowing speed the mower vibrates bad. Also the motor makes a rumbling noise and burns a lot of gas and you can smell the gas. Dealer checked it out and put a new belt on it and refused to take the mower back.

Great tractor that is hurt by the fact that you cant get a bagger for it. have had the mower since May, and no one has any clue when I will be able to get a bagger. Pretty irritating because living in the northeast and having lots of leaves that will need to be picked up, pretty much makes the mower useless. Would I recommend??? Extremely disappointed!

We owned a x300 for 15 years and were very happy with it, so when it came time to buy another mower we purchased the S240 42" model mainly because we needed a new mower and that was all that was available at the dealer in a 42" cut. What a mistake! This mower not only does a poor job of cutting the lawn but it is also difficult to operate. The RIO switch location is poorly thought out and difficult to use. The forward foot control is at an awkward angle and you have to continually adjust your foot location. The Kawasaki engine is a gas hog using 50% more gas than our X300 Kawasaki engine. The mower does a poor job of distributing the cut grass. I tried to find replacement mulching blades in the hopes that would help, but to no avail. The blades have .8" center hole instead of the star design which limits the options available for replacement blades. I ask that the mower be set up properly prior to delivery telling the sales person the height that we normally mow at. He promised that it would be done. I wasn't home when the mower was delivered and when I checked it over it was clear that he had not done anything to set the mower up properly. The anti-scalp wheels were still set at the same location as they were on the show room floor and mower deck was not level. This is the last JD I'll ever buy and will regret purchasing it til the day I get rid of it!

I'm very pleased with my 2021 S240. I've used it several times with the bagging system on my 1/2 acre lawn; it cuts beautifully and seems very well built. My only complaint is that the right side bagger doesn't fully fill. Not a big issue as the left bag is quite large. Maybe I need to adjust the fill pipe somehow. Now I'm waiting to buy a mulch kit. I am quite pleased with the quality and value.
